A Hősök terén álló emlékkövet Szent II. János Pál pápa 1991-es első magyarországi látogatásának emlékére emelte a Fővárosi Önkormányzat 2013-ban, melyet a rákövetkező évben – szentté avatása alkalmából – kiegészítő kővel láttak el. II. János Pál, aki évszázadok óta először az első nem olasz – és a legelső lengyel – nemzetiségű főpásztor volt Szent Péter trónján, a 20. század második felének egyik kimagasló alakja, aki jelentősen hozzájárult a kommunista rendszer bukásához, a hidegháború befejezéséhez és ezáltal Európa újraegyesítéséhez. Két évvel a rendszerváltást követően útja a Szovjet uralom alól felszabadult Magyarországra vezetett, mely egyben a legelső pápalátogatásként is vonult be a történelembe.
Kamień pamiątkowy na Placu Bohaterów został wzniesiony przez m.st. Budapesztu w 2013 roku dla upamiętnienia pierwszej wizyty Świętego Papieża Jana Pawła II na Węgry w 1991 roku, na którym położono dodatkowy kamień podczas święceń w następnym roku. Po raz pierwszy od stuleci pierwszy niewłoski – i pierwszy polski – pastor zasiadł na tronie św. Piotra. Był jeden z najwybitniejszych postaci drugiej połowy XX wieku, który znacząco przyczynił się do upadku komunizmu, końca zimnej wojny, a tym samym zjednoczenia Europy. Dwa lata po zmianie reżimu i wyzwoleniu spod władzy radzieckiej, jego podróż na Węgry stała się także pierwszą w historii wizytą papieską w kraju.
The memorial stone in Heroes' Square was erected by the Municipality of Budapest in 2013 to commemorate the first visit of Saint Pope John Paul II to Hungary in 1991, on which an additional stone was placed, during its ordination in the following year. For the first time in centuries, the first non-Italian - and the very first Polish - pastor sat on the throne of St. Peter. He was one of the most prominent figures of the second half of the 20th century, who contributed significantly to the fall of communism, the end of the Cold War and thus to the reunification of Europe. Two years after the regime change and the liberation of Hungary from Soviet rule, his journey led here, which also became the first papal visit to Hungary in history.
